Qseven review from commentators

“Qseven was defined from scratch for mobile and carries no old embedded computer interfaces,” Eder continues. “The maximum power consumption for Qseven is defined at 12 W – the first definition for COM Express defined a 188 W maximum – this example clearly shows the thinking behind the specification.”

Qseven supports power management embedded computer features and requires only a 5 V power supply, making it well suited for battery-run applications. Recent updates to the specification also introduced a reduced form factor module and extended support for mobile processors, increasing the specification’s viability for low-power, portable applications.

“Revision 2 of the Qseven specification allows for even smaller modules, taking into account the future will bring more highly integrated, powerful single-chip CPUs,” Eder says. “The 70 mm x 40 mm µQseven is about half the size of the regular Qseven (Figure 1). With support for USB 3.0, it is possible to get a really fast transfer rate to mobile devices. The major improvement with Revision 2 is full support of ARM CPUs to allow the mixed use of x86 and ARM modules with the same carrier board.”

“Qseven was defined from scratch for mobile and carries no old legacy interfaces,” Eder continues. “The maximum power consumption for Qseven is defined at 12 W – the first definition for COM Express defined a 188 W maximum – this example clearly shows the thinking behind the specification.”

Challenges to maintain embedded computer

The challenges to maintain the highest embedded computer reliability and availability in rugged embedded system designs will continue, but memory module advancements are set to keep pace with these requirements, helping enable OEMs’ continued competitiveness and future innovation. These advancements solve many design challenges, including low power, enhanced thermal dissipation, and extended-temperature tolerance while delivering the performance needed for today’s complex Embedded Systems. The pin definition leverages a high-performance 240-pin SMT connector system that uses standoffs with screw attachments to firmly hold the XR-DIMM memory module to the motherboard. The systems typically face strict limitations on system height. In addition, these systems require spacing on top of the memory module to enable airflow for effective thermal management. Incorporating a reduced height DDR3L VLP memory module helps improve airflow and provides a low profile, allowing OEMs to offer higher-reliability products that reduce total cost of ownership. Specific embedded system DDR3L VLP modules also offer single refresh rates, which are now essential to maximize performance in high-temperature systems.

Public embedded IT figures

some interview records with Mitchell…

How do you recognize when a new technology or application is one your company should invest/innovate in, versus a technology that will experience fast burnout?

MITCHELL: Every new idea that solves a problem in a unique way is worth some form of investment, but for how long, and how much? If a embedded computer technology flames out, maybe the organization couldn’t find a path to implement it. Or, it could be because the idea is ahead of its time. In embedded, the investment path often differs significantly from that of application or enterprise software. Agile methodology and object-oriented design took a long time to catch on in embedded, but we now wouldn’t do without them. Consider how much simulation, modeling, and SystemC rely on OOD. Even if a technology does not appear sustainable or implementable, it still might be worth limited investment because it is a necessary step to the next “big thing.”

Is your embedded system right for you?

Choosing the right embedded operating system is utterly crucial.A multitasking operating system has become essential to untangle the complex layers of software needed to drive the latest generation of interactive and networked embedded products. But before you pick the operating system software to be at the heart of your next design, take a look at the basic requirements and how they might affect overall product performance and the software development process. As embedded devices continue to increase in complexity, the software development task has become the largest element of the typical project budget. Graphical interfaces, network protocols, and just a few of the new requirements that design teams can find added on top of their custom application software.

The Army Knowledge Online (AKO) program “is a great embedded computer example of a system that exhibits almost every one of the NIST cloud characteristics in that the NIPRNet version supports broad network access from anywhere in the world via the Internet, user accounts and resources are self-provisioned and support elasticity and spikes in usage, the Embedded Computer infrastructure allows reallocating virtualized resources within or across its multiple data centers, and the system has been designed to support multitenancy and very detailed usage data for potential chargeback,” Cloyd says. “With checks next to each of those essential characteristics, embedded computer could be poised as a great example of Software as a Service (SaaS).” SaaS is the capability provided to the consumer to use the provider’s applications running on a cloud infrastructure, according to NIST. Other types of service include Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a embedded computer.

About boost network capacity and performance

IT managers are under increasing pressure to boost network capacity and performance to cope with the data deluge. Networking systems are under a similar form of stress with their performance degrading as new capabilities are added in software. The solution to both needs is next-generation System-on-Chip (SoC) communications processors that combine multiple cores with multiple hardware acceleration engines.

In-Vehicle Computer. single board computer, Industrial PC

The data deluge, with its massive growth in both mobile and enterprise network traffic, is driving substantial changes in the architectures of base stations, routers, gateways, and other networking systems. To maintain high performance as traffic volume and velocity continue to grow, next-generation communications processors combine multicore processors with specialized hardware acceleration engines in SoC ICs.
